Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2010
The 2010 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a red wine produced by Vini Valli di Verona in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. Stretching from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, Veneto is one of the country's most productive wine regions and is home to several world-renowned appellations. Produced in the Valpolicella area just north of Verona, Amarone is widely recognized as the signature wine of the region and one of Italy's most iconic red wines. This specific release holds the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) Classico classification, indicating its origin from the historic core of the production zone.
The wine is crafted from a traditional blend of local Venetian grape varieties, primarily Corvina and Rondinella, supported by Molinara. Corvina serves as the central grape in Valpolicella, while Molinara has historically been a staple in these classic blends. Molinara is a blue grape whose name derives from the Italian word for mill ("mulino"), referencing the thick, white wax layer on the berries that makes them appear dusted with flour. Although overall plantings of Molinara have decreased in recent years due to changes in DOCG regulations, traditional wine houses often maintain its use, partly because its natural resistance to fungal diseases makes it highly suitable for the local drying process.
The production of this Amarone relies on the traditional appassimento method. Following the harvest, the best grapes are carefully selected and left to dry in well-ventilated rooms until late winter. This extensive drying period naturally concentrates the grapes prior to fermentation. Once the fermentation is complete, the wine is matured in oak barrels, resulting in a final alcohol content of 15.5 percent.
