The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Ferrara
Ferrara is a province located in the wine region of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy. The area stretches from the city of Ferrara itself and eastwards towards the Adriatic coast and the Po delta. It is particularly in this coastal part of the province that one finds Ferrara's most distinctive wine production, which is centered around the appellation Bosco Eliceo DOC, which was officially recognized in 1989.
The climate and geography in the wine areas of the Ferrara province are strongly influenced by the proximity to the sea and the lagoons. The soil in the coastal zones consists of up to 95 percent sand, which is a result of deposits from the rivers Po and Reno. This sandy and salty terroir combined with a humid climate creates special growing conditions for the vines. The high proportion of sand in the soil has furthermore had the historical advantage that the wine louse phylloxera has had difficulty surviving, which is why many of the area's older vines are ungrafted and grow on their own roots.
The wine tradition in Ferrara is closely linked to these sandy soils, and the wines from here often go under the local designation Vini delle Sabbie, which translates to the wines of the sand. The production includes both red and white wines. The most prominent local grape variety is the red Fortana, which locally is also called Uva d'Oro, but international varieties such as Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown, as well as local white wine blends under the name Bianco del Bosco.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
