Carménère Reserva Santa Rita 2006
The Carménère Reserva from the 2006 vintage is an estate-grown red wine produced by Santa Rita, a Chilean winery established in 1880. This Reserva classification wine is sourced directly from the producer's own vineyards located in the Valle del Rapel region of Chile.
The wine is made from Carménère. Originally a traditional Bordeaux variety, Carménère is today primarily associated with Chilean viticulture, though it is also cultivated in other wine-producing areas such as Bordeaux, Northern Italy, and California. The Valle del Rapel provides the growing conditions for this specific 2006 release, which was bottled at 14.5% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Rapel Valley
Rapel Valley is one of the largest and most recognized wine regions in Chile, located in the country's vast Central Valley (Valle Central) south of the capital Santiago. The region stretches between the Andes Mountains in the east and the coastal mountain range to the west. It is generally divided into two prominent subregions: Cachapoal Valley in the northern part and Colchagua Valley in the southern part, both of which are named after the rivers that flow through the landscape.
The climate in Rapel Valley is predominantly Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The coastal mountain range partially shields the valley from the cold influence of the Pacific Ocean, which creates a warm and sunny environment. However, cool breezes pull in through the river valleys and down from the Andes Mountains, which provides significant temperature differences between day and night. This microclimate ensures a long and stable ripening period for the grapes.
The wine tradition in Rapel Valley truly took shape in the 19th century when French grape varieties from Bordeaux were introduced to the region. Today, the area is particularly famous for its production of red wines, which make up the majority of the total harvest. It is especially grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, and Syrah that thrive in the valley's warm climate and varied soil conditions, which has cemented Rapel Valley's status as a core area for classic Chilean red wine production.
