Gran Sangre de Toro Reserva Torres 2012
Gran Sangre de Toro Reserva from 2012 is a Spanish red wine produced by the renowned producer Torres. The wine was originally created in the late 1960s, when the then generation of the family decided to develop a reserve wine with a very special and well-defined identity. Torres is a prominent name in the wine world, as underscored by their membership in the Primum Familiae Vini association as well as being named the world's most admired wine brand by Drinks International in both 2014 and 2015.
The wine originates from Catalonia, which is located in northeastern Spain and stretches along the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees in the north to Tarragona in the south. Together with Barcelona, the area constitutes one of the country's most dynamic wine regions. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, though with continental characteristics inland, and the soil offers a great variation of limestone, clay, slate, and granite. Catalonia contains ten official DO areas as well as the prestigious DOQ Priorat, which has Spain's highest quality classification.
This 2012 vintage is classified as a Denominació d'Origen Reserva and is composed of the grape varieties Garnacha, Cariñena, and Syrah. Garnacha is the Spanish name for Grenache and is frequently cultivated in regions such as Rioja, Navarra, and Aragón, while the blue grape Syrah, which is also known by the name Shiraz, has its classic roots in the Rhône and is also widespread in Australia, California, and Washington. As part of the production process, the wine underwent aging in oak barrels for 12 months before it was bottled with an alcohol content of 14.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Catalonien
Catalonia lies in north-eastern Spain along the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees in the north to Tarragona in the south and, together with Barcelona, forms one of Spain's most dynamic wine regions. The area contains 10 official DOs, including Penedès, Empordà, Costers del Segre, Conca de Barberà, Terra Alta, Montsant, Pla de Bages, Tarragona and Alella, as well as the prestigious DOQ Priorat with Spain's highest quality classification.
The climate is predominantly Mediterranean with continental features inland, and the soils range from limestone and clay to slate (llicorella) and granite. The area is home to Cava, Spain's traditional-method sparkling wine, produced mainly in Penedès from Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada. The red wines are made from Garnacha, Cariñena, Tempranillo and international varieties, while the whites are dominated by the traditional Cava grapes and Chardonnay. The style ranges from fresh sparkling wines to powerful, concentrated reds from Priorat with mineral graphite and ripe dark berries. The area is known as the home of Cava and one of Spain's most diverse wine regions.
