Sperss Langhe Gaja 1997
The 1997 Sperss is a red wine produced by the renowned Gaja estate, located in the Langhe Denominazione di Origine Controllata of Piedmont, Italy. The Gaja winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in Barbaresco, though the family's roots trace back to their immigration from Spain in the 1600s. The estate transformed into a global icon under Angelo Gaja, who took over in 1961. He revolutionized Italian winemaking by introducing single-vineyard bottlings in 1967, such as Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn, and Costa Russi, which helped establish Barbaresco as a cru-oriented appellation. He also introduced French barriques for maturation and planted international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Today, the estate is managed by his children, Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni Gaja, representing the absolute top tier of Italian wine production.
Piedmont, which literally translates to "at the foot of the mountain," is situated in northwestern Italy and is bordered by the Alps. It is widely considered one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, characterized by steep hills that are often blanketed in thick autumn morning fog. This fog plays a crucial role in protecting the vineyards and ensuring a long, steady ripening period for the grapes. Within this region lies Langhe, a broad and significant wine area centered around Alba. Langhe serves as an umbrella appellation for many of Piedmont's famous wines and is deeply focused on terroir, reflecting how the specific soil and microclimate influence the vineyards. The area is also a renowned destination for gastronomy, famous for its exclusive white truffles from Alba, local hazelnuts, and rich, simmered dishes.
This 1997 vintage of Sperss is crafted from Nebbiolo, an Italian top-tier grape variety renowned for producing elegant wines with significant structural depth. Nebbiolo is deeply tied to the Piedmont region, particularly in the prestigious areas of Barolo and Barbaresco. While Gaja's portfolio has expanded over the decades to include estates like Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino, Ca'Marcanda in Bolgheri, and IDDA in Sicily, their Piedmont holdings encompass 101 hectares across key municipalities like Barbaresco, Treiso, Serralunga, and La Morra. Bottled at 14 percent alcohol by volume, this wine stands as a testament to the family's historic dedication to the Langhe terroir.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
