Melozal Viña Segú 2001
The Melozal Viña Segú is a Chilean white wine from the 2001 vintage, produced and bottled by Viña Segú in San Javier. The wine originates from vineyards situated in the Melozal zone within the Maule Valley, specifically located between the 35th and 36th parallels south.
This expression is crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, an aromatic white grape recognized for its fresh and lively style. While the variety is typically associated with classic wine regions such as the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, Marlborough, California, and Washington, it is also widely cultivated in Chile. The wine is bottled at 13.5% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Maule Valley
Maule Valley is located in Chile's Central Valley (Valle Central), approximately 250 kilometers south of the capital Santiago. It is one of the country's largest and oldest wine regions. The geography is characterized by great diversity and stretches from the Andes Mountains in the east to the coastal mountains in the west. The area is intersected by the Maule River, which has helped shape the region's varied terroir, offering volcanic, alluvial, and clayey soils.
The climate in Maule Valley is predominantly Mediterranean, but the region is cooler and wetter than the Chilean wine regions further north. The relatively high annual rainfall falls primarily in the winter months, which creates large enough water reserves in the soil that many vineyards can be cultivated without artificial irrigation. The warm, sunny days combined with cool nights, which are influenced by cold air from the Andes Mountains, provide a slow and stable ripening of the grapes.
The region's wine tradition stretches all the way back to the early Spanish settlements in the 1600s. Historically, Maule Valley has been known for a massive production of bulk wine, especially from the local País grape. In recent decades, however, the area has undergone a significant development in quality. Today, the region is particularly recognized for its old, free-standing vines with Carignan, as well as for classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, and white wine grapes like Sauvignon Blanc.
